Tension and suspense will have their writing leaping off the page as they enjoy creating their piece inspired by one of the 8 story starters. Your students can interpret them as they wish to, using any time period and narrative techniques they’d like.

Only one entry per student, there is no limit to the number of entries per school. Teachers please submit your entries altogether where possible!

Mini sagas can be on the entry form or an A4 sheet of paper or typed.

Mini sagas must be your students' own work.

Ensure that all students include their name and age on their entries.

Mini sagas must be told in no more than 100 words (the title isn't included in this).

Independent entries are welcome - please provide your home address details instead of the school's.

Where possible, the school to send / upload / email all their students' entries to us.

Story starters are optional but if used must be included in your students' word count.

[Tips] =>

You’ll see on the student entry form that we have suggested ideas for the theme of hunted. Before you hand these to students, split them into groups. Each group needs a sheet of paper.

Give your students 5 minutes to write down as many ideas of what they think could be hunted or the hunter – encourage them to be creative! Think outside the box.

After 5 minutes, bring the class back together and talk through all their suggestions. They should now have an idea of what to write about and you can introduce the story starter postcards!

The story starter postcards will inspire your students to get writing regardless of age or ability! Your students can be inspired by any of these, or simply write their mini saga on the theme of hunted:

•    It’s not safe now they know...
•    It has to be here somewhere...
•    The sirens wailed...
•    We were close...
•    I couldn’t run for much longer...
•    I had 24 hours...
•    We have to leave. Now.
•    I still have nightmares about it...

You could even ask your students to write their own story starter... then swap it with another student to really give their creativity the chance to shine!

Try this activity to get your students writing with tension...

Split the class into groups and give each group one of these themes:

• High Stakes – what could be won or lost?
• Dilemma – what two (or more) alternatives could the character choose between?
• Unpredictable – what could the character do that was unexpected?
• Time Limits – what time pressure could be applied to the character?
• Revelation – what could be revealed to add a twist to the tale?

Why not inspire your students with exciting endings to wrap up their mini saga perfectly!
