Whether you love to rhyme, create magical worlds, or dive into real-life topics, here are some fun writing prompts to help spark your imagination for our latest writing contest The Annual Showcase. It's open to all styles of writing with a word limit of 1,000 words so you can write whatever you want!
🐾 Animal Acrostic
Pick your favorite animal and write an acrostic poem. That means the first letter of each line spells out a word like the animal’s name.
🧸 Toy Riddles
Think of your favorite toy and write a riddle about it. Don’t give it away too easily - let people guess!
👨👩👧👦 Family Fun
Write about your family! Who’s in it? What makes them special?
🏖️ Favorite Place
Where’s your favorite place to go? Describe it! Who goes with you? What do you love about it?
🐈 Kennings Poem
Pick a person, animal, or object and write a “kennings” poem. A kenning is a two-word phrase that describes something in a fun way. For example, a cat might be a “claw-scratcher” or “milk-drinker.”
🦸 My Superhero Day
Imagine you’re a superhero for the day! What powers would you have? Who would you help? What wild adventures would you go on?
🍁 Nature Poem
Write a poem about your favorite season. What does it look like? Sound like? Smell like?
😊 Emotion Poem
Write a poem about a strong feeling - joy, sadness, excitement, anything! Use descriptive language to show how it feels.
🌲 Nature’s Wonders
Take an imaginary walk through a forest. What do you see? What creatures live there? What surprises are waiting?
📚 Historical Facts
Pick a time in history and write about it - maybe the dinosaurs, Ancient Egypt, or Independence Day!
💌 Personal Heroes
Write a letter to someone you admire. What would you say? Why do you look up to them?
🪐 Space Explorers
Zoom off to another planet! What do you discover? What do the aliens look like? Are they friendly?
🕰️ Time Travel
If you could visit any time in the past, where would you go? Who would you meet? Use historical details to bring your story to life.
🌟 Dream Day
Describe your perfect day from start to finish. What would you do? Who would you spend it with?
🍃 Haiku Moment
Write a haiku about nature. Just remember the 5-7-5 syllable rule and try to capture a small, beautiful moment.
🔎 Mystery Solvers
Write a story where you and your friends solve a mystery or find hidden treasure. What clues do you find? How do you figure it all out?
🌆 The Art of Description
Use all your senses to describe a real or imagined place. What makes it unique? Who or what lives there?
🌍 Real-Life Issues
Write about a real-world issue that matters to you like bullying, peer pressure, or climate change. What’s the problem? Do you have any solutions?
🗣️ Opinion Piece
What are you passionate about? A film, a book, a lifestyle, a band, a sport - anything! Share your thoughts and try to convince others to see it your way.
🐉 Fantasy Realms
Create a world full of magic, mythical creatures, and epic quests. What struggles do your characters face? How do they overcome them?
🕯️ Persona Poem
Write a poem from the point of view of something else - an animal, an object, or even a historical figure. What’s their perspective?
🗞️ Social Commentary
Use your voice to speak up about a social issue you care about. What are your thoughts? What do you want people to consider?
✍️ Sonnet Challenge
Try writing a sonnet - 14 lines, a specific rhyme scheme, and a theme like love, nature, or identity.
🎭 Coming-of-Age Script
Write a play about a teen who has a life-changing experience. What happens? How do they grow?

Remember, these are just jumping-off points to get your creativity flowing. You can write up to 1,000 words, but shorter pieces are totally fine too!
